I wanted to address the parents and fans of Lacrosse. This sport is on the rise and with that comes growing pains. I have always been proud to be associated with this sport because of the spirit-of-the-game disclaimer. What this means is playing with respect for self, officials, and opponents. I am disappointed to see players, coaches, and fans argue with officials, use foul language on the field and show lack of respect to all involved. The result is easy to see. First, we have officials who do not want to officiate youth games because parents and coaches questions calls and blame game outcomes on poor officiating. The reality is most youth coaches and fans are not knowledgeable about the rules of girls lacrosse. As a result they are teaching the youth players improper skills, behavior, and respect for the game (Click here for common misunderstandings about the rules of girls lacrosse). Second, we see parents and coaches putting pressure on youth players before they are mentally and physically able to handle it. Third, most parents don't have a realistic view of their child's skill level. This causes pressure to have their child as the top scorer, receive the most field time, expect that they will receive a scholarship some day. Please read the rule book, attend rules interpretation meetings, learn the game and you will love the game. Above all, respect the game!!!! Support coaches who put in long hours, administrators who do jobs because others won't, referees who love the game and want it to be played safe, and within the rules. Tom Hopkins
